How to use the CHOOSE function in Excel

You can CHOOSE to select from 1 upto 254 values based on an index number. For example, you could enter 4 names of employees and the function returns one of the names when you use a number between 1 to 4 as ‘index_num’.
‘=CHOOSE(2,”James”,”Jenny”,”Fred”,”Harry” ‘ would return ‘Jenny’.
Syntax
CHOOSE (index_num,value1,value2,value3,…)
Index_num is a number between 1 and 254, or reference to a worksheet cell with a number or a formula that will result in a number (1 to 254) as shown in our examples.
If index_num is 1, this Excel function returns ‘value1; if it is 2, CHOOSE returns ‘value2’, etc. If index_num is less than 1 or greater than the number of the last value then it returns the error ‘#VALUE’. For example if you write:
‘=CHOOSE(5,”James”,”Jenny”,”Fred”,”Harry” ‘ would return ‘#VALUE’
If the index_num is a fraction, then it is truncated or reduced to the lowest integer and then used.
‘value1’, ‘value2’, ‘value3’ are value arguments from 1 to 254. These can be formulas, functions, text, named ranges, cell references or numbers. Depending on the index_num CHOOSE selects a value or the necessary action to be performed. For example:
=sum(A2:choose(2,B3,B4,B5)
evaluates to ‘sum(A2:B4)’.
